The World is Your Playground

We were on the last roll of game four. The three of us each had a win and this was the tie-breaker. My mother- in-law-rolled the dice and as the last one settled, with all five showing sixes, she screamed, "Yahtzee!"

She clapped with a proud look on her face as we dramatically groaned, still smiling, and giving her a high-five.

She loves Yahtzee, Rummikub, Scrabble, Pickle Ball, bowling and many other games. She's very competitive and aggressive - far from how she is in her day-to-day life.

She's never been a risk-taker, calculated or not. Everything has to be well-planned to a tee and way in advance. But sometimes she gets so invested in how things should turn out (as she envisioned in her head) that if anything goes the slightest bit sideways, she feels it's a disaster.

I think we're all better off if we applied some of our game playing mindset spill into our daily lives. To dare more. To not take things too seriously. To accept that we can't win all the time - and that's ok.

When we live as if the world is our playground (which it is), decisions come easier. Losing isn't such a hard pill to swallow, knowing our luck will come sooner rather than later. When winning isn't so much the goal but the icing on the cake.

It's about having fun. Bonding and having a good time with others. And whether or not you're the one screaming "Yahtzee!" at the end of a tie-breaker, you know that every single one laughing around the table is already a winner.
